Trolls and teddy bears

Fabulously bright and colourful teddy bear’s picnic cake for a 40th birthday, although no mention of 40 on the cake which made the birthday girl very happy!!

The family of bears were made out of Fimo so they could be kept forever and put on display alongside an impressive bear collection.  The bears were made to represent the birthday girl’s family.  The picnic was all made from fondant and all edible.

This was a 10″ vanilla sponge with jam and buttercream filling.

Catching up on this months fabulous cakes

Wow what a month it has been for Hours of Fun.  It’s been none stop in the kitchen making some fantastic cakes for some amazing people celebrating birthdays, christenings, new babys, brides to be and more.  Alongside this Hours of Fun has been working with Karen’s Little Kitchen to be part of September’s Gin Explorer box.

First up are 2 christening cakes that I was asked to make.  One for a little girl and one for a little boy.  Christening cakes are always fun to make as they are colourful and cute with fun cake toppers.

This was a 2 tier vanilla sponge with jam and vanilla buttercream filling.  Covered in pink and white icing decorating with stripes and icing balls.  Everything is edible except the super cute cake topper.  The baby booties are handmade by Hours of Fun out of felt with button decorations.  This are a gorgeous keepsake and can be worn too or simply put on display.

The baby booties are made to order and can include names or initials to personalise them.  Get in touch if you want to order a pair, they are £10 and come with a clear box for you to keep them in.  You can order them with a cake or on their own.

Blue christening cake with train topper

This cake is a 10″ lemon sponge with lemon curd and buttercream filling.  Made for a very special little boy getting christened.  I’ve had the pleasure of making lots of cakes for this family and this has to be one of my favourite.  The cute train cake topper is made from fondant with the clouds of smoke coming out the top being made from flowerpaste attached to wires.

The cubes with the name on are surprisingly tricky to make.  It takes some patience and lots of smoothing and shaping to get them into a cube with edges and corners.  I love using bunting on cakes and for this cake I used a little fondant mixed with water to pipe the string for the flags to hang from.

Giant Cupcakes – the love may be growing!

I have been keeping my distance from cupcakes for some time.  If I need to make some I will and I love making bite sized ones for home or work as you can get more out of a batch so perfect when sharing them out.

My friend Lou has been telling me to embrace Giant cupcakes for some time now and I am finally seeing the sense in her words!  I have done a few giant cupcakes recently and I treated myself to a new cupcake tin.  They are a fab creation that looks extra special for a birthday or celebration and be decorated in any colour with different piping designs.

My main concern with doing them is that I therefore have to prepare and pipe buttercream, which I have to admit is my least favourite task.  Everyone has their own dislike or chore in the kitchen and mine is buttercream!  I find it to be a rather messy job, that is rather involved when you need to prepare different colours and pipe different designs.  Give me a piping back with icing in any day and I will be happy to pipe on to a cake, the finer detail I find more interested than the buttercream piping.  I am on a mission to find a deliciously tasty buttercream/frosting that is ready made so I can reduce the amount of buttercream I have to deal with!  So far I have tried a few but I have only managed to find a delicious chocolate frosting but my supplier has now stopped selling it so the hunt is back on!  I will not accept just any replacement, it has to match buttercream in taste and texture.
