Catching up on this months fabulous cakes

Wow what a month it has been for Hours of Fun.  It’s been none stop in the kitchen making some fantastic cakes for some amazing people celebrating birthdays, christenings, new babys, brides to be and more.  Alongside this Hours of Fun has been working with Karen’s Little Kitchen to be part of September’s Gin Explorer box.

First up are 2 christening cakes that I was asked to make.  One for a little girl and one for a little boy.  Christening cakes are always fun to make as they are colourful and cute with fun cake toppers.

This was a 2 tier vanilla sponge with jam and vanilla buttercream filling.  Covered in pink and white icing decorating with stripes and icing balls.  Everything is edible except the super cute cake topper.  The baby booties are handmade by Hours of Fun out of felt with button decorations.  This are a gorgeous keepsake and can be worn too or simply put on display.

The baby booties are made to order and can include names or initials to personalise them.  Get in touch if you want to order a pair, they are £10 and come with a clear box for you to keep them in.  You can order them with a cake or on their own.

Blue christening cake with train topper

This cake is a 10″ lemon sponge with lemon curd and buttercream filling.  Made for a very special little boy getting christened.  I’ve had the pleasure of making lots of cakes for this family and this has to be one of my favourite.  The cute train cake topper is made from fondant with the clouds of smoke coming out the top being made from flowerpaste attached to wires.

The cubes with the name on are surprisingly tricky to make.  It takes some patience and lots of smoothing and shaping to get them into a cube with edges and corners.  I love using bunting on cakes and for this cake I used a little fondant mixed with water to pipe the string for the flags to hang from.

Handmade bunting, pink and girly for a baby girl

Coming soon to the Hours of Fun website – handmade, personalised bunting made to order.  Hours of Fun can make bunting for any occasion – new baby or baby shower, birthday present or decoration, congratulations, party decorations and much more.

The brief for this order was pink and girly which is always fun to do.  I used fleece for each flag, cutting them out using pinking shears to give a zig zag finish on the edges.  (This also stops any fraying of the material).  Each letter for the name was machine sewn onto the flags and a button was added to each of the loops at the end of the bias, once the bias was sewn onto each flag.

Wrapped in pink tissue paper, with a ribbon and tag it was ready for the baby shower.  I hope the mum to be likes it 🙂

Handbags and Shoes, a cake for a 60th afternoon tea birthday party

I was asked to make a cake for a handbag and shoe lover – in fact the birthday girl just loves shopping for all things!  I haven’t made a shoe for a few years so it was good to revisit the skill.  I first learnt how to make a flowerpaste shoe in the cake decorating course I completed at college.  You need flowerpaste and a template which you can draw yourself or pop it into the google search and find one to print off, and time to allow the shoe to set.

I used edible glitter to give the shoe a shine and used some edible lace as decoration which I painted silver using edible silver powder mixed with rejuvenator fluid.

The handbag was made from rice crispie marshmallows, with pipped roses covering it.  I again used some edible lace as decoration to tie it in with the shoe.  The handbag strap was made from flowerpaste which was allowed to completely set before it was glued to the bag.

The cake was an 8″ gluten free vanilla sponge with jam and buttercream filling.  Covered with white icing and decorated with edible lace.  It was the first time I had used lace on a cake and only the second time I had made it.  I still can’t believe how simple it is to make and it looks so effective.  I left the lace white however you can colour it by either adding gel colouring to the wet mixture before you make the lace or by dusting or painting the lace once it’s set.  The top of the cake was covered with a circle of blue icing which was embossed using a patterned rolling pin.

The finishing touch was Happy Birthday Jane in blue bunting using my bunting alphabet mould.

Homemade bunting – made to order any colour, design or theme

We have made lots of bunting to order whether it be green and white congratulations bunting, pink and purple butterfly bunting or square flagged minecraft bunting.  We made lots of Christmas bunting with super cute reindeer on and gold bells.

Hours of Fun can design and make the perfect bunting for your room or occasion. We can personalise the bunting with names or messages and make it extra-long or to fit a particular length.
Our standard bunting it approximately 12 flags which equals a length of approximately 2 metres (sometimes varies slightly depending on the design). It can be single sided bunting or double-sided and comes with hoops at each end ready for easy display.
The bunting can be made from material or thick paper/card, with embellishments made from material, felt, buttons, ribbons and much more.

Why not order a matching lampshade to go with the bunting for the perfect gift idea.
